Iceladic history comes to life at National Museum of Iceland, founded in 1863. Though its collections used to be held in various Danish institutions, the museum now houses objects returned to their country of origin in the 19th century. The permanent exhibit includes a celebrated carved door depicting a lion slaying a dragon. • Worth a visit if you're in Reykjavik but not worth travelling far to visit. Has a decent range of items but the displays are so dark that it is impossible to see them in any detail. The layout is slightly strange, with a general chronological route but not a huge amount of thought to natural flow. Highlights include the brooches, the reconstructed bathhouse with the accompanying painting upstairs, and the very bizarre hats worn by the women in all of the early modern portraits. Shop is well stocked but expensive, and the toilets are clean if a bit pokey.
  • Great museum if you enjoy historical artifacts. It's well designed to be enjoyable if you like to skim through, read a little, or dive deep. Totally worth the price of admission, and we were giving free bonus tickets to the Culture House.
  • A modern looking museum that tells about the history of Iceland, but not much more than that. I didn't really read into it, but I expected some more information about Icelands beautiful nature. It was more focused on social history. It definitely shows how peaceful Iceland has been the past 1000 years which makes you realise how special this country is. However don't expect to be able to spend a full day here. It is a relatively small museum, so after two hours you've seen it all. The souvenir shop is nice and there is a classy cafe with good coffee.
  • Great overview of Icelandic history from settlement onwards to modern day. Interesting if you like to learn about history and culture. Also has a photography exhibition, and free lockers for your coats and bags.
  • Excellent museum. We spent almost 2 hours, and were able to see most of the exhibits. The interviews with typical Icelandic people (benches with headphones) were great, as were some of the interactive videos. The Reformation in Iceland could be a season of Game of Thrones. Don't miss the hands-on rooms, even though they're meant for kids. Free lockers in the basement near the washrooms.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
