Trip Planner: Europe / Iceland / Capital Region / Reykjavik / Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition
Learn about the construction of buildings during the time of Vikings and the settlement of Iceland through thousand-year-old artifacts in Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition. Located in Reykjavik City Museum, the exhibit features archaeological finds excavated in Aðalstræti in 2001 which represent the oldest physical evidence of human habitation in the city. A wall fragment from before 871 CE and a longhouse from the 10th century are the focal point of the exhibit. Both are preserved in their original locations. Explore the exhibit to gain an understanding of how the first settlers lived. Follow the displays using an audio guide that's available in several different languages. Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition Reviews

A fascinating expose of the discovery and interpretation of the first house built in Reykjavik in 871 AD. The exhibition was discovered during building of a house and is now preserved in the basement.... more »
A very interesting museum! It's short enough and has enough to look at to keep a bigger kid interested, but long enough to have good, interesting information about the excavated longhouse, as well as the Vikings, their history, and their culture. Some of their touchscreens didn't work the best, but that's the only negative thing I have to say. Seeing animations and early tools from the first settlers of Iceland was incredibly cool. I strongly recommend going here, as it's the perfect thing to do when you only have 1-2 hours and want to learn about the culture and history of Iceland and the Vikings!
This was highly recommended by both friends and tour guides so we went to check it out. Its a small but fun exhibit that gives you a peek into the history of Iceland. It's very interactive which I loved. In what I'm pretty sure is the kids section they also had games from the same age as the rest of the exhibit that can you play. My husband and I sat down (it was the last hour the museum was open so it was extremely quiet) and played some of the games which was the highlight for me.
