Hallgrimskirkja, Reykjavik

4.4
An unusual-looking church, the design of Hallgrimskirkja was inspired by the forms created when lava cools into basalt rock. The church was designed by Gudjon Samuel in 1937 and constructed between 1945 and 1986. The tower, at 73 m (239.5 ft) tall, dominates Reykjavik's skyline. The view from the top looks out over the entire city, plus the rocky, volcanic landscape and the sea beside the capital. Inside the church, listen to the melodies wafting from the enormous, 25-ton pipe organ. A statue of Leifur Ericsson, the first European to reach America, stands directly outside the strange edifice. • Located close to the centre of town and opposite the famous cafe Loki, this landmark has a beautiful view and is highly accessible. Hopefully you can time your visit with an organ performance.  more »
  • Everyone visits this site, but if you time it just right, you might also be able to hear a lovely organ concert for free!  more »
  • Step in Reykjavik. You can climb the tower to paying a reasonable price. It is simple and beautiful. Its facade is like basalt formations that abound in the country.

  • A very nice church, so different from most others. Very light inside, no overloaded decorations and an impressive organ. Would have loved to see the tower but the queue was simply too long.
  • We came across the church while wandering around Reykjavik. It looked so impressive, that we just had to visit. Entry to the church is free, but they appreciate donations. It is also possible to pay to climb the church dower, but we didn't do this on our visit. Sometimes the massive organ is being played, which was very impressive, although was not my taste of music.
  • Great church. Huge but sparse decorations. It has a fee to get to the top of the tower. Good thing to do to pass the time.
  • Church with cool design/architecture and amazing views. The outside is concrete and interesting and the inside is modern and minimalistic. The best part is the 360 degree view at the top. When you walk into the church lobby, turn left to buy your tickets in the gift shop. You'll likely wait in a line to ride a six-person elevator to the top. Waiting in the line doesn't take long and it's worth it!
  • Gorgeous place and very powerful inside. Large sweeping concrete building with high ceilings inside. A must for the religious adventurer and a cozy little spot out of the rain for anyone else. Free to enter, although the lift to the top costs around 900-1000k. (8-12$ US.) You don't need to pay to go up though, as you can see the same thing here on google ;) Not worth the trip up if its raining and cloudy, as it usually is, but the church itself is a landmark to be certain, not at all to be missed.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
