Einar Jonsson Museum (Listasafn Einars Jonssonar), Reykjavik

4.6
Einar Jonsson Museum (Listasafn Einars Jonssonar) houses artworks by Iceland's first major sculptor, and the artist's penthouse apartment is preserved in its original condition. Jónsson offered all of his works as a gift to the Icelandic people in 1909, and the museum was built soon after, following the artist's design. The main gallery is filled with fantastical sculptures of Vikings and mythical heroes. The sculpture garden with bronze casts of the artist's works was formally opened in 1984. Look for the peculiar ring of stones between the office and museum buildings, put down by the sculptor himself. The museum shop sells plaster casts and postcards of exhibited works, as well as books about Jónsson's life and art. • Right across the street from Hallgrimskirkja, this museum occupied the high point of the city for many years. Einer Jonsson built this place in the early 1900's as his studio, home and museum hoping t...  more »
  • is a very famous artist in Ice Island, the works are mainly carved, very front, but it is still easy to understand, if the travel is limited to visit garden works, garden is free, the museum to collect

  • The Museum is located near the Cathedral, in the House that he had built for himself and his wife and that he later used as a Museum for his works. Contains works infused with a Nordic symbolism characterized by an unmistakable style. A brilliant artist with a great imagination that I didn't know and that I thoroughly enjoyed. Charming garden surrounding the Museum, littered with copies of his sculptures and frequented by beautiful cats.

  • Absolutely amazing. Personally I think this is the best tourist attraction in Reykjavik. Undescribably impressive sculptures. You should visit here.
  • We only visited the (free) sculpture garden. Open 24 hours. And we loved it. Some very nice sculptures with a lot of symbolism. Sometimes a bit more explanation would have helped but the sculptures are very lovely. If you are at the church this is just next door and should not be missed.
  • My favourite place - great layout, tranquil setting and a wonderful way to explore Einar's work.
  • An unexpectedly great museum, we only went in as the church was shut and thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so I would recommend it over the church. The works inside are brilliant, eye catching and very clever, an exceptionally talented artist! You also can see the originally lodgings of Jónsson and his wife at the top and also the architecture history of the building in its own right is pretty cool
  • Amazing place! If you have any appreciation for sculpture go there! It's truly great stuff! The way he is mixing old norse with christian symbolism is awesome!

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
