Einar Jonsson Museum (Listasafn Einars Jonssonar), Reykjavik

4.5
Einar Jonsson Museum (Listasafn Einars Jonssonar) houses artworks by Iceland's first major sculptor, and the artist's penthouse apartment is preserved in its original condition. Jónsson offered all of his works as a gift to the Icelandic people in 1909, and the museum was built soon after, following the artist's design. The main gallery is filled with fantastical sculptures of Vikings and mythical heroes. The sculpture garden with bronze casts of the artist's works was formally opened in 1984. Look for the peculiar ring of stones between the office and museum buildings, put down by the sculptor himself. The museum shop sells plaster casts and postcards of exhibited works, as well as books about Jónsson's life and art. • An amazing museum, gallery, and sculpture garden that should not be added to your cultural itinerary of Reykjavik! The range of work by one artist is outstanding and the viewer can learn a lot about t...  more »
  • The Museum is big enough. An explanatory text on the realization of sculptures in french can be given to you then do not hesitate to ask. The sculptures are worth the look! Some are huge. It is sometimes subjugated by a sculpture (some are "special" and we wonder why he made them... Small flat, we can't take a picture. Good visit do count 8 euros entry. And if you don't want to pay to see these works, you may as well visit the garden for free or you can find in bronze. (All those of the Museum are not in the garden but it can give you an overview) The gardens can be taken a picture.

  • An unexpectedly great museum, we only went in as the church was shut and thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so I would recommend it over the church. The works inside are brilliant, eye catching and very clever, an exceptionally talented artist! You also can see the originally lodgings of Jónsson and his wife at the top and also the architecture history of the building in its own right is pretty cool
  • Amazing place! If you have any appreciation for sculpture go there! It's truly great stuff! The way he is mixing old norse with christian symbolism is awesome!
  • There is no better (or cheaper) spot to take a date. Especially if you're dating a goth, because this place is a bit creepy.
  • I can't actually comment on the inside of the museum (though during a quick walk to the restroom, it looked lovely), but the sculpture garden out back has free admission, interesting sculptures, and is a nice little spot for a picnic or stroll.
  • I can not comment on the inside as it was 1000 krons, i decided not to go in. But there are lots of sculptures in the garden.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
