Bridge Between Continents, Reykjanes Peninsula

3.9
#1 of 10 in Parks in Reykjanes Peninsula
Cross the rift supposedly separating Europe and North America by walking over Bridge Between Continents. A thin, steel deck in the middle of nowhere lies across the point where two tectonic plates are diverging. "Welcome to America" and "Welcome to Europe" signs greet you as you cross. The gorge below the bridge is not very deep or dangerous, so you can easily walk through and pass under the bridge. Notice the engraved padlocks on the fence, which symbolize the love of couples who visited the bridge. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Grindavik holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Bridge Between Continents and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • If you are headed to the Blue Lagoon, about 20 minutes further is the bridge that connects two continents( North American and Europe) . It is impressive and FREE!!  more »
  • Yes you absolutely should go here! It’s amazing to stand between 2 tectonic plates. How many opportunities do you get to do something like that? We visited in winter so the contrast of the snow and la...  more »
  • Here the continental plates meet each other and you stand on the bridge almost on two continents.

  • There's not a lot here to see here, but it's an interesting visual to help convey the uniqueness of bridging two continental plates. It also sort of positions Iceland as a bridge between Europe and the US....which seems an appropriate analogy to me. I wouldn't recommend going way out of your way to visit, but it's not a bad add-on before checking back into the airport.
  • Easy drive to site. Very open and peaceful. Nature entertains you in Iceland not Disney!
  • Perhaps one of the most overrated places on the Reykjanes Peninsula when put next to the likes of Reykjanesviti, Brimketill and Selatangar, more one of those 'I've done it, but I won't revisit' places. It's cool to see the two continental plates and stand between them, but other than that, there's nothing really to it and if you don't visit here whilst in Iceland, it would not be the end of the world as there's far more interesting and beautiful places to see.
  • Fifteen minutes from Keflavik. Interesting place where you can be "in America" without a visa.
  • Interesting location where it is possible to view the mid Atlantic ridge up close with a bridge spanning both sides. It is also possible to walk along fault line and be amazed at this awesome feature as well as explore the volcanic landscape close by. Access is easy with a short walk from the nearby car park.
