Dettifoss, Lake Myvatn

4.7
#1 of 20 in Parks in Northeast Region
Dettifoss is thought to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. At 100 m (328 ft) wide and 44 m (131 ft) tall, it is also one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland. Part of Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, this natural beauty is on the popular Diamond Circle route. Walk the well-maintained footpaths to find the best viewpoints; walkways next to the waterfall allow you to get quite close. Hear the thunderous sound that this magnificent waterfall makes and feel the ground tremble under your feet. Due to the water's mist reacting with the sun, rainbows often form over the waterfall. Be respectful of any paths that are blocked off; this is most likely due to weather conditions and is for your safety. • It is the biggest waterfall in Iceland and in Europe, very impressive. You can get there from either side, so probably it would be good to pick one depending on the sun position. Stunning. Skip other ...  more »
  • Most of the waterfalls on Iceland are beautiful and small but this one is just huge. Its roaring sound tells you what is meant by the force of nature. The view should be more impressive if we visit it...  more »
  • We walked to both falls, guided by a knowledgeable guy in geology and culture. Great experience. Ages ranged from 30 to 66. Fairly accessible and quite worthwhile. VERY IMPORTANT: Get reliable reports...  more »

  • The road 864 was pebble, bumpy and long, although it was definitely worthy to visit. The best waterfall we have seen in Iceland. There are two accessible road to Dettifoss, it seems like 864 takes you to better view side of waterfall in the afternoon. This side let you see waterfall and the flow of water in a wide angle.
  • A massive waterfall, so cool to see. A short hike is all it takes. Despite being off the ring road a ways, and a short hike from the parking lot, there was lots of tourists here. Well worth a quick visit though!
  • We drove to countless waterfalls in Iceland and this is hands down my favourite! It is breathtakingly beautiful and even more impressive than Gulfoss in my opinion! We came here just in time for sunset and amazingly had the vast canyon to ourselves. We went to the east side and had to drive 45m along a dirt road but it was completely worth it. If there is one waterfall you see make it this one!
  • Hands down my favourite waterfall. There is actually two roads to get here. Each road takes you to different sides. I would recommend taking the road east of the river leading to the falls. You can really Ger up and close. It is a bit bumpy but worth it.
  • A beast of a waterfall. Loud, misty, and beautiful. Its a must see if you're traveling around Iceland.
