At Glacier Lagoon chunks of blue icebergs float along the shore so close that you can almost reach out and touch them. This glacial lake at the head of Breidamerkurjokull glacier developed as the glacier began to drift away from the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the tongue of the lake, where icebergs break away from the glacier and drift from the lake into the ocean. Keep your eyes peeled for seals, fish, and sea birds, such as arctic tern, who make their home in the lagoon. Walk the length of the lagoon's shore to the black beach, where you'll find icebergs washed ashore. Several tour companies operate boat tours on the lagoon. Glacier Lagoon reviews
I visited Jokulsarlon in August 2019. It is a beautiful location and I would recommend visiting it. However, I would advise you to be wary of booking the amphibian tour. I booked for my friend and me.... more »
While on a road trip from Reykjavík to Southeast Iceland with my family, and stopping over in Höfn, we decided on a whim to take the amphibious boat tour. I had done it once before, in 2014, and it... more »
Toke the bus with my ringroad buscard from Skaftadell on a bright new day. Got off here at Jokulsarlon and I put up my tent up near the restaurant. A stunning view on the lake with the glacier to the north in the background entered my tent. Job well done, I thought. A short hike along the edge of the lake, the shortest river on earth and the beach with its small icebergs with a hamburger ontop where enough to put me asleep after the strenuace journeys I have had. The following morning I was early awakened by a strong northern wind that was chilled further by the glacier it gone over and through the iceberg laiden lake. From 15 to 20 deg C the last day it gone to freezing this summer day. Straight into my tent. Walking over the murrenes is nice. Walking near colonies of stern is asking for trouble, I know now.
Must see! Any time of the day. Here you can easily grab a hold of very old ice. PW, park & watch!
