St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika), Budapest

4.7
Visit the prominent Hungarian landmark St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika), known for its 91 m (300 ft) Neo-Renaissance-style dome. This Roman Catholic basilica--built in the Neoclassic architectural style with a Greek Cross floor plan--was completed in 1905 and used for military purposes during World War II. While it is still used for religious worship today, this church is also one of the most visited tourist sites in the country. The right hand of St. Stephen I, the first King of Hungary, is housed in the church's reliquary. View the basilica's structure and bell towers from the square in front of its main entrance, explore the interior of the church, and climb the 364 stairs (or take the elevator) to the top of the dome, which overlooks the city. • The basilica’s interior is very impressive and well worth a few minutes of your time. Suggested donation for the visit is 100 HUF per person.  more »

  • This place is a great place to visit. A quiet place to have a moment of contemplation or reflection considering it's location in the hustle and bustle of Budapest. Once inside you get to see the amazing interior which is amazingly done. For 200ft you can light up the preserved hand of St Stephen. But once inside I definitely recommend taking a moment for yourself, enjoy the peace and look up at the wonderful artwork across the basilica. Once you have seen everything inside as you exit you can take a trip either by lift or by the 302 steps to the observation area at the top of the basilica around the dome where you will be treated to the most amazing views of Budapest. Definitely recommend it in a clear day but on any day it is fantastic. This place is one of my most favourite places in the world and every trip to Budapest is not complete without visiting the Basilica.
  • The jewel in Budapest. A must visit place when you are here. The sight of the dome will set your heart pounce a little bit faster, remind to stay calm in order to absorb every details of it. Still wondering how they did it?
