Schloss Heidelberg, Heidelberg

Among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps, the ruins of Schloss Heidelberg offer sweeping views of the surrounding area. The castle has been partially rebuilt since lightning bolts and fires caused massive destruction in the 17th and 18th centuries. It dominates the view of the old downtown, just as it did in the 13th century. Sitting on a hillside above the city, the castle can be easily reached by a funicular railway, itself a major regional tourist attraction. Be sure to pick up an audio guide near the entrance into the castle. To access interior areas not available otherwise, join a guided tour of the castle and its grounds. • It was a tourist package trip, so we had to follow the guide. Lol.. The city is very beautiful and worth the visit. The castle itself, not so much. They're ruins with little to see beyond that. Unlike other castles (Neuschwanstein for example) there is no visit from the inside, ie, no view furnished rooms, etc. The "Most interesting" I saw were two barrels, one of 100,000 liters and another of 200,000 liters. Gardens with no appeal, just grass. The view from above is very beautiful.... Finally, for those who know other castles more "complete", this does not add much.

  • This place is incredible. The whole area is beautiful and the views of the city are top notch. If possible, I'd strongly suggest going as early as possible so you can get pictures without massive tour groups constantly going through
  • The Palace is incredibly beautiful inside and out. The price is affordable compared to other attractions and learning about the rich history here was fascinating. It can get a bit busy here, but it wasn’t too crowded. They even offer tours in Japanese in order to accommodate as many people as possible. The small restaurant inside was beautiful and cozy. You can also get a great view of Heidelberg and the river from the palace.
