#2 of 461 in Things to do in Gard
The highest and best-preserved Roman aqueduct bridge in the world, the nearly 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard is a monument to Roman engineering and a World Heritage site. In its heyday, the aqueduct carried an estimated 200,000 cubic m (nearly 53 million gal) of water each day to the local baths, homes, and fountains. Due to the varied terrain, the aqueduct was created with different construction methods, ranging from underground construction to this bridge with three grand tiers of arches. • I was angry to pay 10EUR to see a bridge. You enter and there is a complex with museum and all kind of activities that you did not ask for. Then you proceed to the bridge. All of this without seeing i...  more »
  • The excitement you feel in front of Gard's Pont is indescribable. We go back more than two thousand years since it was built in 19 BC. One wonders how in ancient times they managed to make these works that have come perfectly preserved to us... And today if you think about the MOSE... we just get a great sadness to think about how we were then it's like we are today...

  • Wonderful and historic structure is just awesome and splendour. Been wanting to see this place for some years and is probably the best structure I've ever seen. I can understand why and well worth the entrance fee of 9€50, (free parking after buying entrance tickets). Best to stay a full day and enjoy the river bank, have lunch and go for a swim. I would have loved to have gone under the arches in a canoe, but didn't,..may be next time. Gorgeous.
  • What a great place with an interesting history. This piece of Roman culture, architecture is a must see. UNESCO world heritage, outside of season not too crowded. Have a small dinner or lunch at the river Gard, climb on top of the hill after you crossed the aqueduct. 2-3 ways lead to higher view points, helping you to discover the entire area.
