A male-only monastery, Debre Bizen has witnessed an abundant and storied history since its founding in the 1350s. Monks at the institution resisted Ottoman pressures in the 16th century and managed to retain their faith, while today the monastery's library houses one of the oldest and most valuable Ge’ez manuscripts. Since the site sits at an altitude of 825 m (2,706 ft), and is only reachable by foot, you should wear shoes with thick soles and bring plenty of water for the walk. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Debre Bizen and many more Asmara attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Asmara road trip website.
