Fortaleza San Felipe, Puerto Plata

When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. • As part of a city tour, we ended at Fort San Felipe. It is well marked and a (included in the price) oral guide is quite informative.Very interesting and worth a short visit.  more »
  • Nice from the historical sense, but it is falling apart and covered with graffiti. You won’t spend much time there.  more »
  • We enjoyed the tour greatly. We learned history and got to be part of it thank you we will tell all our friends  more »

  • Lovely views that are free to roam. To see the actual fortress you do need to pay but you can easily roam around the gardens around it. Not many areas of shade so do make sure you have water and sunscreen. Some evenings there are live events.
  • Beautiful ocean views. Nice historic fort to check out. Bought some jewelry from locals at the plaza at a good price
  • Was a great stop on our cruise and fun to visit!
  • Beautiful spot to take some great pictures. Be careful not to fall into any tourist traps with buying treats or donkey rides. Our friend was lifted onto the donkey by the donkey's owner and she then hustled money from us. But she was sweet so we didn't mind. There is a charge to enter the fort but there is no charge to hang out outside and take tons of pictures - also the washrooms didn't have toilet paper so bring your own.
  • This is a great place to visit for amazing views of Puerto Plata and a brief introduction to some of the Dominican's history (audio tour included with the small admission fee). Just keep in mind that It's a small site with only basic facilities, probably allow 30 minutes to an hour to explore.
