Fortaleza San Felipe, Puerto Plata

When in Puerto Plata, pay a short visit to Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress and the only remnant of the 16th century city. Situated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, the fort was used to protect the city from pirate attacks. Commissioned by King Felipe IV of Spain, the fortress was erected in 1577, witnessed a couple of battles, and was occasionally used as a prison. Today you can visit the fort, which was converted into a museum in 1965. See the military artifacts inside and enjoy the scenic bay views. • Each wall of the place has history. The place is very clean, the entrance is very economical. My spouse and I enter, pay the trip in audio and was spectacular this time. Styles and colonial places love her and be there did she enjoy much. Then leave you can walk to the amphitheater and then to the lighthouse. The place is charming.

  • It wasn't a very long tour. They hand you a listening device to listen to the different exhibits. It's a cheap attraction and some interesting facts. The reception/gate didn't have change for a twenty...  more »

  • Beautiful spot to take some great pictures. Be careful not to fall into any tourist traps with buying treats or donkey rides. Our friend was lifted onto the donkey by the donkey's owner and she then hustled money from us. But she was sweet so we didn't mind. There is a charge to enter the fort but there is no charge to hang out outside and take tons of pictures - also the washrooms didn't have toilet paper so bring your own.
  • This is a great place to visit for amazing views of Puerto Plata and a brief introduction to some of the Dominican's history (audio tour included with the small admission fee). Just keep in mind that It's a small site with only basic facilities, probably allow 30 minutes to an hour to explore.
  • Nice view of the sea and lovely statue of General Luperon. Souvenir can be bought and a nice port to the west can be seen.
  • Lovely view. Great idea of history. Horrible headphone set to listen throughout the tour. Great information but very old and broken.
  • Great place of heritage from latin american!!
