Guayabo National Monument, Turrialba

#2 of 19 in Parks in Province of Cartago
Uncover the mysterious terrain of Guayabo National Monument, the largest archaeological site in Costa Rica. Still largely un-excavated, the 232 ha (573.2 acre) site was once a thriving city, occupied as early as 1000 BC and inexplicably abandoned in 1400 CE. Weave your way through the remaining ruins of the city’s dwellings, aqueducts, and tombs, and keep an eye out for enchanting petroglyphs. A ramble around the mystical monument, surrounded by one of the last rainforests of its kind in Cartago, provides an authentic excursion into an ancient part of the country’s heritage. Before you head to Turrialba, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Turrialba trip itinerary maker site, to make sure you see all that Turrialba has to offer, including Guayabo National Monument.

  • There is a walk around the site with good signs in Spanish and English. Visible are the stone bases of some buildings, two catchement pools that connect by underground aqueduct, a rebuilt causeway...  more »
  • If you want to see ruins this is a great, short stop with a lot of history. It didn't cost very much and was a nice walk through the jungle. They have a lot of signage telling you what you are...  more »

  • Cute, hidden and not too well known site of indigenous town. The cheerful park ranger who also welcomes you at the entrance is very passionate about the park and his role within it. If you are near the Turialba area well worth a visit, yet do not expect any similar experiences as grander indigenous sites in Mexico, Peru etc
  • I think this park is best to do with a guide. There are not many signs/history in the park and the ruins are very small compared to other central American countries. The park staff are very nice and the facilities are very modern and clean.
