#1 of 6 in Trails in Province of San Jose
Explore Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, a lush tropical rainforest that draws visitors for trekking and observing exotic plants and wildlife. Overlooking the dense green landscape, the inactive Barva Volacno--a peak of 2,906 m (9,534 ft)--supports an extraordinary biodiversity due to the range of altitudes, from the high altitude Volcán Barva to the humid lowlands on the Caribbean slope. Trek among 6,000 species of plants, or take the aerial tram for 2.6 km (1.6 mi) which glides you smoothly through the treetops. You'll find an abundance of wildlife in this habitat, with over 500 bird species and 150 mammals. Watch for white-faced monkeys, jaguars, bare-necked umbrellabirds, the common tink frog and the largest venomous snake in Costa Rica--the matabuey. • We were both happy and sad to see there was only one other car parked in the lot for this park. It meant we had the trail for ourselves, but it also meant people didn't give this place prominence like...  more »

  • Beautiful, highly recommend to anyone who likes nature walks. We saw some cute sloths and Tucans. You can hike on your own using a very clear and safe trail or take a guided tour. Even the drive through the park is worth it!
  • This is a lovely walk - you first enter through a place where you have to sign yourself in and can make a "donation" to the preserve. You can hire a tour guide who are very good at spotting wild life or you can trek it alone. The path is rather wide and there are a lot of people on it, so you don't have to worry about being in the jungle alone. You really have to keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife, they love to blend in. All except the monkeys, you'll know if a monkey is around LOL! I a lot of wildlife. The trail ended for me at a river crossing that was particularly deep on that day. The path keeps going and when the weather clears up from the rainy season the river goes down and is cross able. A few tourists were debating folding the river when it was deep until a guide told them that there were cayman in the water and he wouldn't recommend it. So- they thought better of it! Anyway you should definitely take time to see this cite. It is a nice long walk and it's a bit like playing where's Waldo with the wildlife.
