Discover centuries of Costa Rican history at Museo Nacional De Costa Rica. Established in 1887, the museum sits within the Bellavista Fortress, the former army headquarters which saw Civil War battles, and where president Jose Figueres Ferrer abolished the military in 1949. Admire the historic structure and explore the museum inside, which boasts exhibits of the country's history ranging from pre-Columbian artifacts to displays about the colonial era and the independent nation. • Every time I travel to Costa Rica, I make sure to stop at this museum, best way to know the evolution, culture and the reason why the Ticos are the way they are. Peaceful country.  more »

  • This was the most affordable of the 3 main museums which also includes the Jade and Gold museums. It is well laid out in that if you go to the right you naturally progress from the early history to the latest history. The history of the jail is in a separate basement level and a children's ecology exhibit is in its own building as well. I enjoy learning and spent about 2 1/2 hours here reading most exhibits. About the right size with crowds to not feel crowded but not empty either.
  • Loved this museum! Great timeline of information and artifacts from pre-colonial to present day. Almost all information is in both Spanish and English. Highly recommend for tourists or anyone. And there is a student deal, even if you’re from out of the country! Nice views from the museum too.
