Carara National Park, Carara

#1 of 12 in Nature in Province of San Jose
Explore Carara National Park, a wildlife haven due to its transition between dry and wet rainforest. A popular hiking spot in close proximity to San Jose, the national park bears the name of one of its most prominent residents, the American crocodile. Walking along the Tarcoles river, you might see a few of these crocs, which can grow up to 6 m (20 ft) in length. Birdwatchers flock here to observe the abundance of avian life, including one of the largest scarlet macaw communities in Costa Rica. Hike through the dense rainforest for the chance to spot deer, kinkajous, frogs, water birds, and many species of monkeys. Put Carara National Park and other Carara attractions into our Carara journey maker , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • First of all, we didn't have such high expectations of the park, but we were surprised how many animals live there. Most of all, we saw poisonous frogs, big spiders, and lots of birds. Most animals you will only be able to see with a guide. Our guide was Maurice Vasquez, who showed us all the great animals, but we wouldn't have seen them without him. Luckily Maurice was able to speak German, which of course was very accommodating to us. If you are also looking for a German-language guide, you can reach Maurice by his email address. (mauriciovasquezpizarro@gmail.com) One thing you should always keep in mind is that you should be shown before a guided tour by a guide, an official guide license, in order to prevent accidents and fraud.

  • Less crowded than Manuel Antonio. We saw more macaws and holler monkeys here than Manuel but we saw way more sloths in Manuel Antonio.  more »

  • Had a great day viewing the critters at this wonderful national park. Recruited Andre at the gate as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and his English was excellent. If it's your first time at the park its well worth the money unless you enjoy wandering aimlessly in the jungle. Saw lots of macaws, iguana, frogs, butterflies and even a monkey. Beautiful trees and foliage. If you don't feel like getting up at 5 am and standing in line at Manuel Antonio this is a good option.
  • If you love nature you have to come here. The wildlife is just right there in your face. In fairness coming from Europe it was perhaps more amazing for me as you tend not to see such an amazing abundance every day in Europe as you do in the park. I cannot recommend enough.
