Hol Chan Marine Reserve, San Pedro

4.7
Belize's top snorkeling and diving site, Hol Chan Marine Reserve dazzles with its impressive coral formations and diverse marine life. Its reefs shelter a dizzying variety of creatures, including 40 types of coral and 160 different species of fish. This thriving underwater kingdom also provides a home for several mammals, including pantropical spotted dolphins and short-beaked common dolphins. The marine reserve encompasses mangroves and beds of sea grass, which ensure a safe habitat for southern stingrays and nurse sharks. You can get up close to both of these species, as they're quite used to visiting tour boats. • We really enjoyed this trip. It's an easy ride from Ambergris Caye. Great snorkeling in about 30' of water. We saw a lot of schooling fish, a couple of rays, a nurse shark and a couple of barracuda am...  more »
  • This is a great spot for both snorkelers and divers. Mostly shallow, with a 30' deep cut in the reef lined with coral and overrun with schools of fish. Only problem is the crowds. Get there early or l...  more »

  • Very cool dive and snorkel site. It's a shallow and easy dive. Best visited at night, otherwise during the day it's mostly fish, sharks and rays. If you can go at night and the day dive and snorkel trip will probably be redundant.
  • Belize has really done an excellent job of policing and preserving the reefs close to their cayes. Both Hol Chan and Caye Caulker Marine Reserves are truly chick full of coal and marine life including fish, saw a moray eel, schooling fish in multiple locations, lots of sea fans, etc. The water is also wonderfully clear and the water fairly gentle especially if you're careful not to go out on a windy, stormy day. Many good tour companies and you must use a tour guide as they do police the boats in the reserves to make sure the is compliance. Would also recommend wearing reef safe sunscreen (titanium oxide) and the are many brands available now.
