Ruin Landmark Must See
Admire the artistry and scale of the country's largest Mayan archaeological site, Caracol. Now surrounded by dense jungle, this was once one of the most important and powerful Mayan cities, covering an area of 177 sq km (68.3 sq mi) with a population of around 100,000 people. The site today includes 53 carved stone monuments, and numerous tombs and burial sites, all linked up by well-signposted trails through the jungle rich in wildlife. Head to the visitor center to plan your route through the old city, and to learn about the history of the buildings and contemporary issues in excavation and archaeology. Plan to visit Caracol during your Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve vacation using our convenient Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve trip planner.

  • Definitely worth the long trip away from the more traveled areas. So many fantastic ruins and lots of wildlife around, too. Definitely go with a guide though, as the roads are bad and you won't be able to absorb anything at the ruins without one. It is also worth making the stops at the Rio Frio Cave and the Rio On Pools as part of your trip. I recommend St. Leonard's Tours, as their prices were the best I could find and they were fantastic to deal with and definitely delivered on the tour.
  • Place is gorgeous and so full of history. Guide from Maya Walk answered every question and gave out so much info. Sky Palace/Temple was Bomb dot com :) . Would go back.
