National Gallery of Victoria offers a great lesson in Australian cultural identity. Founded in 1861, the country's oldest public art museum has a vast collection of Australian Aboriginal, colonial, Impressionist, modern, and contemporary art. There's also an international collection, which displays ancient and modern work by artists from around the globe, including Picasso, Rembrandt, and Degas. Make sure you leave time to see some of the 15,000 snapshots in the museum's photo collection. Also check out what the rotating exhibitions are while you're in town. Flew from Adelaide to have a look at the Escher exhibition, and previously been to other exhibitions put on by the Gallery. The flow of the exhibition was shocking, and you enter a bottleneck and it just hasn't been set out nicely. That being said, its still a fantastic exhibition and the whole Gallery is beautiful and well worth spending a full day exploring. The display off to the right is always fun as they have an interactive section for kids (or big kids). There can be some disorder as it wasn't monitored so little kids jump the queues, but overall its wonderful to see kids interacting with art

Visited the Escher exhibition and wasn't disappointed! It's a huge collection of his works across his career, with installations designed for you to interact with. It gave a real insight into the depth of his technical ability over and above the impossible images he's better known for. You rather lose track of time as you work your way through. I recommend choosing a quiet day/time in order to fully appreciate it as there are parts where the flow doesn't quite work and bottlenecks form
