St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Brisbane

3.9
St Paul's Presbyterian Church is a heritage-listed church at 43 St Pauls Terrace, Spring Hill, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Francis Drummond Greville Stanley and built from 1887 to 1889 by Thomas Rees. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.
St Paul's Presbyterian Church, a Gothic-style stone building which dominates the skyline at Spring Hill, was constructed between 1887 and 1889.
The congregation of St Paul's, which at the time was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, founded their first Brisbane church on the corner of Creek and Adelaide Streets in 1863. This early timber structure was replaced in 1876 by a stone building of substantial proportions, which in turn was sold to the Queensland National Bank in 1886 and subsequently demolished. The sale enabled the purchase of a site in Leichhardt Street, Spring Hill for the construction of a new place of worship.
Former Queensland Colonial Architect Francis Drummond Greville Stanley was commissioned to design a building well beyond immediate requirements, in anticipation of the church playing a more prominent role in the development of Queensland Presbyterianism.

  • The parish has a few bitter and twisted ladies filled with self regret about the life they wished they had. If your life experience seems bigger to them it's best not to talk about it otherwise they might commit every single one the ten commandments. "Thou Shalt not covet thy neighbour" or your "Cover" application letter. I have attended services here at random infrequent times. Once they had a Scottish Bagpipe band which was great. On Tuesdays from 8am to 10am they have free morning tea to everyone. Occasionally students who are learning English visit. But the students shouldn't be offended by the church's lack of first hand knowledge of other cultures. The church organisation here is mostly senior citizens and are from a different era. They know church history & you can talk about your country. Sometimes parishners talk about other people's money & a hint that they wish they had it. But we are not dead yet and haven't thought about who to leave our tiny money box to? There is a Bible study group here on Tuesday. Self affirming and meditative prayers seem to be the focus of the teachings. Also, healing, sin and redemption. The architecture inside the church is of interest to a foreign visitor. Arches, stain glass windows and all the aesthetics of a traditional church interior.
  • A good place for a wedding with cooperative and friendly staff.
