Discover Australia’s proud military history at Brisbane’s heritage-listed Anzac Square, featuring the iconic war memorial dedicated to the men and women who participated in overseas armed services. Named in honor of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and opened on Armistice Day in 1930, the square is the focal point of annual events marking ANZAC Day (April 25). Also featuring the Shrine of Remembrance and the Eternal Flame, this site is a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of a busy modern city. Nearby is the Shrine of Memories, with war-related statues and the Women’s War Memorial. The square’s manicured park is a popular stop for central business district workers, local picnickers, and tourists taking a breather on their journey through the city.
