Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires

3.9
#7 of 60 in Historic Sites in Buenos Aires
One of the city's main squares, Plaza de Mayo has long served as a hub for protests, activism, and political activity in the capital. Originally laid out in the late 16th century, the square features palm trees, gardens, and grassy stretches, all surrounded by historical buildings. The year 1810 saw the start of the nation's revolution against Spain begin here, and you'll likely see some sort of march or rally during your visit. Do take the opportunity to inspect the white obelisk in the center, a commemoration of the country's first year of independence from Spain. Perfect for a rest in the shade of the trees, after a walk and take a nice picture in front of the casa rosada.

Awesome historical spot. Some barricades up but reasonably accessible. The presidential palace and the church were amazing.

This is a square with lots of of restaurant and close to the old town area. Some street vendor with interesting souvenir and antique. We found a guy who was selling Mate Tea pot which he decorates with sculpture on a aluminum plate wrapped around the teapot. It is very unique and beautiful. Even if you don't have any purpose or intent for shopping, simply sit and have a cup of coffee will be a pleasant thing to kill your afternoon.

All tourists visiting Argentina should walk around this historical place. Pay attention to the images printed on the ground: Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo white headscarves which symbolize their children's diapers.

Where to stay in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires offers an impressive selection of budget-friendly and mid-range lodgings, as well as pricier, more luxurious options for visitors who don't mind splashing out. Good rooms are scattered across town, but your best bet for economical hostels remains San Telmo, a neighborhood on the edge of downtown. For boutique establishments and international five-star hotels, head to Palermo, Recoleta, or Puerto Madero, upscale neighborhoods drawing the majority of foreign visitors.
