El Ateneo Grand Splendid, Buenos Aires

4.7
#3 of 287 in Shopping in Argentina
Browse an extensive collection of books in a spectacular setting at El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a bookstore housed in an early 20th-century theater. The theater first opened in 1919, and was later converted into a cinema. Today bookshelves replace seats in the stalls and galleries. Ascend to the top floor for a bird's-eye views of the floor below. Look up to admire the intricate ceiling frescoes. The theater boxes remain, converted into reading nooks where you can peruse a book before you buy. On the stage and backstage area, enjoy a coffee or empanadas at the onsite cafe. Although the store primarily stocks Spanish-language books, they also carry a wide range of English-language titles. • Being Chilean, is always a good choice buying books in Argentina, since they do not have the tax of 19%. The place is simply wonderful. Housed in an antique theatre it is maintained in an excellent way. The organization is clear and it is relatively easy to find books. Good service from staff, constantly come to help.

  • Magical place for lovers of art in general and reading! Don't call it bookcase... this place live literature, architecture, music, film... It is wonderful to explore your infrastructure that preserves the history of the theater that was. There you can enjoy reading without obligation of purchase, in distributed even in the antique boxes, chairs and go on stage... to drink a coffee. Missed your dome...

  • The place looks very cool and I would recommend to get it to have a look if you pass by. However if this is a long detour I would not recommend it unless you are a library liver of course! The setup is amazing and they have done a tremendous job converting this old theatre into library to a point where you wonder why others have not done the same already.
  • Such a beautiful book store where you can spend hours and hours. If you think of a title they have a book for it. A full floor dedicated to kids books. If ever in the area it is a must see.
  • This is a beautiful bookstore in the heart of the city that used to be a theater. It is really incredible and definitely worth a look! There are not many English books though, so if you are looking for that, this is not the place.
  • A beautiful old theater converted into a huge bookshop. Unfortunately my Spanish skills and travel itinerary didn't allow me to purchase anything, but it seems that there is a wide range of topics covered. If nothing else, pay a visit just to see what they've done with the place.
  • Must see for any tourist and book lover. Such a wonderful place to just enjoy a beautiful architecture and get lost in piles of books. Choosing a book and sitting down to read in one of the box seats is an incredible experience.

Where to stay in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires offers an impressive selection of budget-friendly and mid-range lodgings, as well as pricier, more luxurious options for visitors who don't mind splashing out. Good rooms are scattered across town, but your best bet for economical hostels remains San Telmo, a neighborhood on the edge of downtown. For boutique establishments and international five-star hotels, head to Palermo, Recoleta, or Puerto Madero, upscale neighborhoods drawing the majority of foreign visitors.
